Amelup is a small rural locality in the Shire of Gnowangerup within the Great Southern region of Western Australia, situated approximately 95 kilometres north-north-east of Albany along Chester Pass Road. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 71 residents, reflecting the locality's sparse, agricultural character.
Amelup has a rich history linked to the sandalwood trade of the 1890s and was opened for farming selection in the late 1920s, with properties now primarily engaged in cropping and grazing. The locality offers a scenic rural setting with the dramatic silhouette of the Stirling Range providing a striking backdrop, and is home to the Stirling Range Retreat, a popular base for bushwalkers and nature lovers visiting the national park. The nearest significant services are found in the town of Gnowangerup to the south, while Albany — the region's main centre — is about a 90 minute drive, offering full urban amenities.
