About Amphitheatre
Amphitheatre is a small rural locality on the Pyrenees Highway in central-west Victoria, situated approximately 177 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and roughly midway between Ararat and Maryborough within the Pyrenees Shire. The locality takes its name from the natural bowl-shaped landform created by the surrounding hills along the Avoca River valley. With a population of around 223 residents spread across a large area of 152 square kilometres, Amphitheatre is one of Victoria's quieter farming communities, characterised by pastoral grazing and a modest historic settlement.
The area has a rich gold-rush history dating to 1853, and a handful of heritage-listed buildings — including the old Amphitheatre Railway Station — serve as reminders of its more bustling past. Today, residents enjoy a peaceful rural lifestyle surrounded by rolling hills and open farmland, with the larger service towns of Beaufort and Maryborough each accessible within about 30 minutes. The Avoca River provides a scenic backdrop, and the locality forms part of the broader Pyrenees wine region, known for its cool-climate shiraz and chardonnay vineyards.
Amphitheatre falls under postcode 3377 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ripon (Western Victoria) electorate.
