About Arbouin
Arbouin is an extremely remote rural locality in the Shire of Mareeba, situated in far north Queensland approximately 278 kilometres west of Cairns. Covering over 1,060 square kilometres of tropical savanna country, the locality has virtually no permanent residential population, with the 2021 census recording zero residents. The Walsh River flows through the north-eastern corner of the locality, providing a seasonal water source for the surrounding wilderness. The area sits within the Mitchell Plateau tableland, characterised by eucalypt woodlands and sparse tropical vegetation.
Arbouin is largely uninhabited pastoral and wilderness land with no infrastructure for permanent residents. Access to the locality is via unsealed outback tracks that may become impassable during the wet season (November to April), requiring high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles. The nearest service centre is Chillagoe, approximately 74 kilometres to the east, offering limited supplies and services. The locality falls within the federal electorate of Kennedy and the state electorate of Cook, reflecting its position in one of Australia's most remote and sparsely populated corners.
Arbouin falls under postcode 4892 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Traeger electorate.
