About Ashley

Ashley is a small rural locality situated on the Carnarvon Highway, 17 kilometres north of Moree in the Moree Plains Shire of north-western New South Wales. With a population of approximately 351 residents, the locality sits at 195 metres elevation on the fertile black-soil plains that define this agricultural region. The area was established in the late 19th century and takes its name from the English home of a former Member of Parliament for Moree.

Ashley is a significant cotton-producing district, with two large modern cotton gins operating in the area servicing the irrigated black-soil farms that surround the locality. The agricultural mix includes wheat, sheep, wool, and beef cattle alongside the dominant cotton industry. Community life centres on the Ashley Community Hall, Midkin Park, and the Rural Fire Service brigade. Residents travel to Moree for shopping, healthcare, and secondary schooling.

Ashley falls under postcode 2400 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Northern Tablelands electorate.
