About Augathella
Augathella is a small outback town in the Murweh Shire of south-west Queensland, situated along the Warrego Highway approximately 100 kilometres north-west of Charleville. The town covers a vast area of around 1,460 square kilometres and had a population of approximately 393 residents in 2021, down from 449 in 2016, reflecting ongoing demographic pressures faced by remote Queensland communities. The surrounding landscape is quintessential outback mulga and Mitchell grass plains used for extensive sheep and cattle grazing.
Augathella is well known for the iconic 'Meat Ant' sculpture erected to celebrate the town's pastoral heritage, and serves as a stopover point for travellers on the Warrego Highway heading towards Mount Isa. The town has a small school, pub, and basic services, and the community has strong ties to the wool and beef industries. Greyhound buses service Augathella on the Brisbane–Mount Isa route, and the nearest regional centre with significant services is Charleville. Visitors are drawn to the open skies and genuine outback character of the area.
Augathella falls under postcode 4477 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warrego electorate.
