About Avalon
Avalon is a small locality in Victoria's City of Greater Geelong, situated approximately 15 kilometres north of Geelong and 53 kilometres south-west of Melbourne CBD, near the northern Bellarine Peninsula. The locality is best known as the home of Avalon Airport — Victoria's second airport — which serves as a base for Jetstar domestic operations and hosts the biennial Australian International Airshow. With a small resident population of around 255, Avalon is predominantly an industrial and aeronautical precinct rather than a conventional residential suburb. The area falls within the Lara state electorate and Division of Corio federally.
The landscape around Avalon is flat and open, framed by views of the You Yangs Regional Park to the north-east and Port Phillip Bay wetlands to the south. While everyday amenities are limited locally, the nearby township of Lara (about 6 kilometres away) provides supermarkets, schools, cafés, and community services. Avalon's proximity to both Geelong and Melbourne via the Princes Freeway makes it attractive for those working in logistics, aviation, or industrial sectors. The area is part of a broader growth corridor with planned residential and employment precincts anticipated in coming decades.
Avalon falls under postcode 3212 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lara (Western Victoria) electorate.
