About Avoca
Avoca is a historic rural locality and small town in the Fingal Valley of north-eastern Tasmania, situated within the Northern Midlands Council area approximately 27 kilometres from the Midlands Highway on the Esk Highway and around 80 kilometres south-east of Launceston. With a population of 192 at the 2021 Census, Avoca is a principal town in the Fingal Valley and serves as a minor service point for the surrounding farming district. The locality covers a large area of approximately 393 square kilometres of rolling pastoral land, river valley country, and forested ranges.
Avoca is noted for its heritage character, with several historic buildings including the St Thomas Anglican Church (completed 1842) and the Union Hotel (1842), which reflect the town's origins as a significant pastoral and mining settlement in the nineteenth century. The nearby Fingal Valley is known for its scenic beauty, cool-climate agriculture, and links to local coal mining history at Storys Creek and Rossarden. Residents have access to local services in Avoca itself, as well as the larger towns of Fingal (16 kilometres east) and Campbell Town (approximately 50 kilometres west) for broader shopping and health services, with Launceston providing full city amenities about an 80-kilometre drive away.
