About Balladong
Balladong is a rural locality within the Shire of York in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, situated adjacent to the historic town of York approximately 97 kilometres east of Perth CBD. Covering 50.6 square kilometres of gently undulating agricultural land along the Avon River, Balladong is notable as the site of the first settled farm in inland Western Australia, established in 1831. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 93 residents, and the ATO-reported median income of approximately 1,700 is broadly in line with rural Wheatbelt averages.
Balladong's defining landmark is the Historic Balladong Farm Group, a State Heritage-listed precinct featuring stone stables, a granary, and mill buildings dating from the 1850s — recognised as some of the oldest farm buildings in Western Australia. The locality sits within the broader York township area, meaning residents have immediate access to York's charming historic streetscape, boutique shops, cafes, the York Village Bakehouse and Tearooms, and community facilities. Aged care services including BaptistCare Balladong Gardens are also present in the locality. York is served by a daily Transwa bus service connecting to Perth, though most residents rely on a private vehicle for everyday travel given the limited frequency of public transport.
Balladong falls under postcode 6302 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Central Wheatbelt (Agricultural) electorate.
