About Ballangeich
Ballangeich is a small rural locality in western Victoria's Western District, situated within the Shire of Moyne along the Hopkins Highway, approximately 30 kilometres north-east of Warrnambool and 247 kilometres west of Melbourne. With a population of 71 residents across roughly 84 square kilometres of open grazing country, it is one of the smaller communities in Moyne Shire. The name Ballangeich is of Scottish Gaelic origin, translating loosely as 'windy place', a fitting description of the wind-swept open plains that characterise this corner of south-west Victoria.
The locality is predominantly pastoral, with sheep and cattle grazing on rolling grassland managed by the traditional owners, the Eastern Maar people. Ballangeich sits between the regional centres of Warrnambool to the south-west and Mortlake to the north-east, and is historically noted for its connection to the devastating Ash Wednesday fires of 1983, which started in the area and caused widespread loss of homes and livestock. Residents travel to Warrnambool or Mortlake for services, schools, and shopping. A limited regional bus service operated by Victoria Regional Buses links Ballangeich along the Mortlake–Warrnambool corridor.
Ballangeich falls under postcode 3279 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the South-West Coast (Western Victoria) electorate.
