About Ballaroo
Ballaroo is a vast, semi-arid rural locality in the Maranoa Region of outback Queensland, located approximately 72 km south-southwest of Roma and around 505 km west of Brisbane. Covering an enormous 1,786 square kilometres of open mulga scrub and Mitchell grass plains, it recorded a population of just 51 people in the 2021 census. The landscape is quintessential outback Queensland, characterised by wide horizons, red soil, and sparse vegetation adapted to low and unreliable rainfall.
Life in Ballaroo revolves around large-scale pastoral farming, primarily cattle and sheep grazing on extensive properties. There are no services, shops, or public facilities within the locality; Roma is the nearest town offering a full range of services, fuel, and supplies. The area attracts those drawn to remote outback living, with mustering, bore-running, and the rhythms of station life defining the community's character.
Ballaroo falls under postcode 4455 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warrego electorate.
