About Barfold
Barfold is a small rural locality in central Victoria, positioned on the Heathcote-Kyneton Road approximately 17 kilometres north of Kyneton and around 100 kilometres north of Melbourne. The locality falls within the Mount Alexander Shire and covers approximately 38 square kilometres of gently undulating countryside typical of the region. With a 2021 Census population of just 82 residents, Barfold is a sparsely settled farming community with an agricultural character shaped by grazing and dryland cropping.
Barfold is perhaps best known for Barfold Gorge, a spectacular four-kilometre-long gorge up to 80 metres deep featuring two waterfalls, basalt columns, and a lava cave on the Campaspe River — a remarkable natural feature tucked away in this quiet farming district. A community hall and a small Anglican church are among the few local landmarks. The nearest town for services and shopping is Kyneton, which offers supermarkets, schools, cafes, and a V/Line train connection to Melbourne; the postcode 3444 also covers the larger nearby town of Redesdale.
Barfold falls under postcode 3444 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Macedon (Northern Victoria) electorate.
