About Barratta
Barratta is a rural locality in the Burdekin Shire Council area of north Queensland, situated approximately 20 kilometres north of Ayr in the lower Burdekin district. The locality covers approximately 237 square kilometres of flat cane and grazing country on the floodplain of the Burdekin River delta, one of the most productive sugarcane regions in Australia. With a 2021 Census population of 85 residents, Barratta is a sparsely settled area whose name is believed to derive from an Aboriginal term describing the chain of lagoons found in the landscape.
The Burdekin district is Australia's largest irrigated sugarcane growing region, and Barratta's southern portions are devoted to cane production, while the north supports cattle grazing on native vegetation. The nearby towns of Ayr and Home Hill, both within the Burdekin Shire, serve as the main service centres for the district, offering schools, shops, and medical facilities. The locality is accessed via the Bruce Highway, which passes through the broader Burdekin region connecting Townsville to the north and Bowen to the south.
Barratta falls under postcode 4809 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Burdekin electorate.
