About Beacon
Beacon is a small agricultural town in the Shire of Mount Marshall, located in Western Australia's Central Wheatbelt region approximately 333 kilometres northeast of Perth. The town had a population of 123 at the 2021 Census and covers a locality area of over 700 square kilometres, reflecting the large-scale broadacre farming that defines this part of the state. Established in 1931 as a service centre for surrounding wheat farms, Beacon sits at an elevation of 373 metres on the gentle rises of the northern Wheatbelt.
Agriculture — predominantly wheat and other cereal crops — is the economic backbone of Beacon and its surrounding district, and the town serves as a Cooperative Bulk Handling (CBH) grain receival point, making it an important node in the regional grain supply chain. Basic local services cater to the farming community, with the nearest major centre being Merredin approximately 130 kilometres to the south. Like many small Wheatbelt towns, Beacon has a close-knit community sustained by seasonal farming activity and the resilience of rural Western Australians who have worked this land for generations.
Beacon falls under postcode 6472 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Central Wheatbelt (Agricultural) electorate.
