About Bendoc
Bendoc is a remote rural locality in the far east of Victoria's Gippsland region, nestled in a valley at the foot of Mount Delegate within the East Gippsland Shire. Situated approximately 110 kilometres north-west of Orbost and around 485 kilometres east of Melbourne, Bendoc is one of Victoria's most isolated communities. With a population of 109 at the 2021 Census spread across more than 556 square kilometres of rugged bushland, the locality sees minimal passing traffic despite being a point of interest on the Snowy River Country trail.
Bendoc has a rich gold mining history, with alluvial gold first discovered in the Bendoc River in 1855 and a small rush that once swelled the population to hundreds. Today the town retains a quiet character, with the Bendoc Hotel, community hall, post office, police station and Country Fire Authority brigade serving the small resident population. The surrounding landscape of timbered ridges and river valleys is well suited to four-wheel driving and bush exploration, and the nearby Snowy River National Park and surrounding state forests attract nature-oriented visitors to the region.
Bendoc falls under postcode 3888 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Gippsland East (Eastern Victoria) electorate.
