About Bethanga
Bethanga is a small rural town in north-eastern Victoria, located within the Shire of Towong approximately 390 kilometres north-east of Melbourne and 27 kilometres east of Wodonga. The locality covers a large area of around 116 square kilometres and had a population of 485 at the 2021 Census, reflecting its sparse, rural character. Bethanga sits near the shores of Lake Hume — one of Australia's largest water storage reservoirs — and gives its name to the iconic Bethanga Bridge (also known as the Bellbridge Bridge), a historic steel truss bridge spanning the upper reaches of the Murray River arm of Lake Hume.
Bethanga has a rich gold mining history dating back to the 1850s, when alluvial gold and quartz reef discoveries at Ruby Creek, Gold Creek, and Jarvis Creek drew prospectors to the district. Today the area is known for its recreational fishing, boating, and bushwalking around Lake Hume, with the lake and surrounding national park providing a stunning natural backdrop. Residents and visitors enjoy the quiet, lakeside atmosphere and easy access to the larger regional centres of Wodonga and Albury across the border, which together offer a full range of shopping, schooling, and health services.
Bethanga falls under postcode 3691 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ovens Valley (Northern Victoria) electorate.
