About Black Mountain
Black Mountain is a small rural village on the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales, situated in the New England region approximately 30 kilometres north of Armidale and 15 kilometres south of Guyra, within the Armidale Regional Council area. The locality spans around 223 square kilometres of cool-climate highland country at elevations typical of the New England Plateau, characterised by open grazing pastures and granite outcrops. With a population of 291 at the 2021 Census and a median household income below the regional average, Black Mountain is a modest pastoral community in one of Australia's distinctive highland farming regions.
Black Mountain lies amid the high tableland grazing lands that define the New England character — cool winters, clear skies, and rolling paddocks with distant mountain views. The village is well positioned between Armidale and Guyra, with the New England Highway providing easy access to both towns. Armidale, home to the University of New England, a regional hospital, secondary schools, and a broad range of shops and cultural facilities, is the main service centre for locals, reachable within a 30-minute drive.
Black Mountain falls under postcode 2365 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Northern Tablelands electorate.
