About Blackheath

Blackheath is a historic Blue Mountains township in New South Wales, situated approximately 120 kilometres west-northwest of Sydney at an elevation of around 1,066 metres above sea level. Located within the City of Blue Mountains LGA, it sits between Katoomba and Mount Victoria along the Great Western Highway. With a population of around 4,479 (2021 census), Blackheath is one of the higher-altitude communities in New South Wales, experiencing cool temperate conditions with cold winters and mild summers. The town retains a strong sense of community identity and has long been a popular destination for weekenders and tree-changers from Sydney.

Blackheath is renowned for its vibrant arts scene, monthly growers and community markets, and the celebrated annual Rhododendron Festival held each November. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn by world-class bushwalking at Govetts Leap, Evans Lookout, and the Grand Canyon Walk deep into the Grose Valley. The village centre features independent cafés, galleries, antique shops, and the historic Gardners Inn. A mix of retirees, artists, young families, and weekender homeowners give Blackheath a bohemian yet tight-knit character.

Blackheath falls under postcode 2785 and is governed by Blue Mountains Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Blue Mountains electorate.
