About Bloomfield
Bloomfield is a remote coastal locality in Far North Queensland, situated within the Cook Shire Council area on the banks of the Bloomfield River between Cape Tribulation and Cooktown. The locality lies within one of Australia's most ecologically significant regions, where the Wet Tropics World Heritage rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef. With a population of approximately 228 residents spread across a vast 806 square kilometre area, Bloomfield is one of the most sparsely settled localities in Australia.
The area is accessible via the famous Bloomfield Track — a challenging 4WD route from Cape Tribulation — or by road from Cooktown to the north, making it a destination for adventurous travellers and those drawn to an off-grid, nature-immersed lifestyle. The nearby Wujal Wujal Aboriginal community, known as "a place of many waterfalls," sits on the Bloomfield River and is a significant cultural presence in the area. Residents and visitors can explore ancient rainforest, pristine river swimming holes, and remarkable biodiversity in this extraordinary corner of tropical Queensland.
Bloomfield falls under postcode 4895 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Cook electorate.
