About Blue Mountain
Blue Mountain is a rural locality in the Isaac Region of Central Queensland, situated inland from Mackay in the elevated country between the Eton Range and the Pioneer Valley. The locality lies approximately 40 kilometres south-west of Mackay and falls within the Isaac Regional Council local government area. At the 2021 Census, Blue Mountain recorded a population of 83 residents across a substantial area of approximately 423 square kilometres, typical of the region's sparsely settled grazing and agricultural land.
The locality is characterised by grazing and cattle farming, with the timbered country featuring species such as Messmate, Blue Gum, and Ironbark set against a backdrop of productive native grasslands. Blue Mountain Road is the main access route, connecting the area to the coastal communities of the Mackay region, including the sugar-growing town of Eton to the north. The higher elevation gives the area a slightly cooler, higher-rainfall climate compared to coastal Mackay, making it well suited to beef cattle production. The wider Isaac region is Queensland's premier beef cattle and coal mining region, giving Blue Mountain a strong connection to both pastoral and resources industries.
Blue Mountain falls under postcode 4737 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mirani electorate.
