The locality is closely associated with the Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme, with several dams and power stations in the area.

Bogong is a gateway to Victoria's alpine country, offering access to Mount Bogong, Falls Creek ski resort, and the Alpine National Park. The area is popular with hikers, skiers, and nature enthusiasts, with the Bogong High Plains providing spectacular alpine wildflower displays in summer. There are no shops or services — Mount Beauty is the nearest town. The locality attracts outdoor adventurers and hydro workers in this dramatic mountain setting.
