About Boondooma
Boondooma is a rural locality in the South Burnett Region of Queensland, spread across an expansive 822 square kilometres of mixed farming and grazing country in the Burnett River district. Located within the South Burnett Regional Council area, it sits roughly 200 kilometres north-west of Brisbane and approximately 60 kilometres west of Kingaroy. With a 2021 Census population of 70 residents, Boondooma is one of Queensland's sparsely settled but historically significant pastoral localities.
The area is anchored by two major attractions: the heritage-listed Boondooma Homestead, established by the Lawson brothers and Robert Alexander in 1846 and one of Queensland's oldest surviving pastoral stations, and the Boondooma Dam on the Boyne River. The dam, built in 1983 to supply the Tarong Power Station, has become a popular inland camping and fishing destination, with golden perch, silver perch, and Australian bass fingerlings released annually. Caravan sites, cabins, a kiosk, and recreational facilities make the dam foreshore a drawcard for visitors across South East Queensland, bringing a welcome tourism dimension to this otherwise quiet rural locality.
Boondooma falls under postcode 4613 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Nanango electorate.
