About Boort
Boort is a small agricultural town in the Shire of Loddon in north-central Victoria, situated 251 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and 103 kilometres north-west of Bendigo. The town sits beside Lake Boort and has a population of 940 residents spread across a large locality covering over 255 square kilometres. Boort takes its name from the Djadjawurrung word meaning 'smoke from the hill', reflecting the area's deep connection to its traditional custodians, the Djadjawurrung people.
Boort is best known for its exceptional native birdlife, with Lake Boort attracting waterbirds that draw birdwatchers from across the region. The local economy is underpinned by agriculture — including cereal crops, canola, olives, tomatoes, hay, and wool — as well as olive processing and tourism. The town's main street, Godfrey Street, retains a classic country-town character, and the area's over 500 scarred trees reflect its rich Aboriginal cultural heritage and significance to the Djadjawurrung people.
Boort falls under postcode 3537 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Murray Plains (Northern Victoria) electorate.
