About Booyong

Booyong is a small rural locality in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, sitting in the hinterland between Lismore and Byron Bay approximately 20 kilometres north-east of Lismore. The locality straddles both the Byron Shire and the City of Lismore local government areas, covering around 9 square kilometres of subtropical hinterland. With a 2021 Census population of 84, Booyong remains a lightly settled community set among rolling hills and remnant rainforest.

The area is notable for containing the Booyong Flora Reserve (now part of Andrew Johnston Big Scrub Nature Reserve), a 13-hectare remnant of the once vast Big Scrub subtropical rainforest — one of the last fragments of a 75,000-hectare lowland rainforest that covered much of the Northern Rivers hinterland before European settlement. The locality takes its name from the Bundjalung word for the booyong ironwood tree, reflecting the deep Indigenous heritage of the region. Residents enjoy a peaceful rural lifestyle with easy access to the boutique village of Clunes, the regional centre of Lismore, and the famous beaches and cafes of Byron Bay just 30 kilometres to the north-east.

Booyong falls under postcode 2480 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lismore electorate.
