About Branxholm
Branxholm is a small rural town in the Dorset Council area of north-east Tasmania, situated approximately 93 kilometres north-east of Launceston along the Tasman Highway on the banks of the Ringarooma River. With a 2021 Census population of 236 — a decline from 267 in 2016 — the town covers around 45 square kilometres of forest and agricultural land. Branxholm carries a rich history rooted in tin mining from the late 19th century, and later evolved through timber sawmilling and hop farming, all of which have shaped its identity as a working rural community.
Despite its small size, Branxholm offers a surprising range of basic services including an IGA supermarket, a pharmacy, and local dining, making it a practical stopping point on the Tasman Highway corridor. The surrounding landscape of lush forests, rolling hills, and the Ringarooma River valley provides excellent opportunities for fishing, bushwalking, and nature tourism. Branxholm appeals to those seeking an authentic, unhurried Tasmanian lifestyle, with the larger town of Scottsdale about 20 kilometres to the south providing additional services and schools.
Branxholm falls under postcode 7261 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Bass (McIntyre) electorate.
