About Breakaway
Breakaway is a suburb of Mount Isa in the City of Mount Isa, located approximately 4.4 kilometres east of the Mount Isa CBD in outback Queensland. With a population of 187 across an area of just over one square kilometre, it is a compact residential suburb on the eastern fringe of the Mount Isa urban area. The suburb sits east of the Leichhardt River, placing it in the 'mineside' section of Mount Isa that is defined by the city's major mining operations to the west.
Breakaway offers a quiet, suburban character relative to the industrial energy of central Mount Isa, with residential homes and access to the broader Mount Isa urban services including shopping, schools, and medical facilities. The suburb's name reflects the rugged outback landscape that characterises northwest Queensland, and residents enjoy a frontier lifestyle some 1,824 kilometres west of Brisbane. Mount Isa's economy is driven by the massive copper, silver, lead, and zinc mine that underpins employment for much of the city's population.
Breakaway falls under postcode 4825 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Barkly electorate.
