About Brookton
Brookton is a historic agricultural town in Western Australia's Wheatbelt region, located approximately 138 kilometres south-east of Perth via the Brookton Highway. The town serves as the seat of government for the Shire of Brookton and covers a vast local government area of around 581 square kilometres. With a 2021 Census population of 732, Brookton is a small but tight-knit rural community with deep roots in wheat farming and sheep grazing that stretch back to the 1840s, when European settlers first moved into the district.
The town's commercial heart features the essential services of a Wheatbelt service centre, including a hotel, general stores, and community facilities. The Great Southern Railway passes through Brookton, and the original station — opened in 1889 — played a pivotal role in transforming the area from isolated farmland into a recognised township. History enthusiasts can visit the Old Police Station Museum, which houses artefacts and memorabilia from the district's pioneering era, while the surrounding agricultural landscape of golden wheat fields and sheep stations defines the region's timeless rural character.
Brookton falls under postcode 6306 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Central Wheatbelt (Agricultural) electorate.
