About Budgeree
Budgeree is a small rural locality in the Latrobe City Council area in Victoria's Gippsland region, situated approximately 20 kilometres south of Morwell in the hilly farming country between the Latrobe Valley and the Strzelecki Ranges. The locality's name is thought to derive from an Aboriginal word meaning 'good place', reflecting the area's fertile soils and reliable rainfall that attracted settlers from 1879. With a 2021 Census population of 146 residents spread across around 44 square kilometres, Budgeree has a long dairying and mixed-farming heritage.
Budgeree's community centres on the Prosper Valley Road corridor, where three historic community halls stand as reminders of a once-larger farming settlement. The area's scenic, hilly landscape supports continued agricultural activity, while the nearby Latrobe Valley cities of Morwell (approximately 20 kilometres north) and Moe (approximately 30 kilometres north-east) provide schools, hospitals, shops, and services. There is no railway at Budgeree, and car travel is essential; the nearest stations are at Morwell and Trafalgar, both around 24–30 kilometres away.
