About Bulgun
Bulgun is a small tropical rural locality in the Cassowary Coast Region of Far North Queensland, situated approximately 5 kilometres north of the town of Tully and around 140 kilometres south of Cairns. With a 2021 Census population of 285 residents across a compact area of roughly 7 square kilometres, it is a close-knit farming community set amid the lush sugar cane and banana growing country of the Tully River valley. The area sits within the electorate of Hinchinbrook and falls under the jurisdiction of the Cassowary Coast Regional Council.
The surrounding landscape is defined by tropical agriculture — sugar cane fields, banana plantations, and rainforest-clad ranges that give this part of North Queensland its exceptional fertility and rainfall. Tully, just a short drive to the south, is renowned as one of Australia's wettest towns and provides residents with supermarkets, schools, a hospital, and community services. The Bruce Highway offers straightforward access north to Cairns and south to Townsville, making Bulgun a peaceful rural retreat within reach of regional amenities and the natural wonders of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.
Bulgun falls under postcode 4854 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Hinchinbrook electorate.
