About Bungama
Bungama is a small locality in the Mid North region of South Australia, situated approximately 6 kilometres east of Port Pirie and around 218 kilometres north of Adelaide within the Port Pirie Regional Council area. With a population of 116 residents in the 2021 Census across an area of approximately 20 square kilometres, Bungama occupies flat plains at the southern foot of the Flinders Ranges. The locality is strategically located at the intersection of the Augusta Highway (Highway 1) and Warnertown Road, serving as the southern gateway into Port Pirie from the south.
Bungama is bisected by the Adelaide–Port Augusta railway line and is home to a significant 275kV electricity substation operated by ElectraNet, as well as the site of the world's first vanadium flow battery — reflecting its role in regional energy infrastructure. The Augusta Highway passing through provides easy access to Port Pirie's full range of services, including schools, shopping, medical facilities, and the city's smelting and industrial economy. The locality is surrounded by the rural landscapes typical of the southern Flinders Ranges foothills, with Port Pirie's foreshore, Spencer Gulf, and the Flinders Ranges all within easy reach.
