About Bungonia

Bungonia is a historic small town in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, located 28 kilometres south-east of Goulburn and approximately 185 kilometres south-west of Sydney. Sitting at an elevation of around 581 metres, it covers a large rural area of 325 square kilometres within the Goulburn Mulwaree Council local government area, and had a population of 469 at the 2021 census. The town is one of the oldest European-settled localities in regional NSW, with pastoral and agricultural heritage dating back to the early 19th century. Bungonia is best known today as the gateway to the Bungonia Gorge — the deepest canyon in Australia.

Bungonia offers a quiet, affordable rural lifestyle with access to outstanding natural scenery. The Bungonia State Conservation Area is the drawcard, attracting bushwalkers, rock climbers, cavers, and nature lovers from across NSW and beyond. The town has a small general store, a school, and community facilities, with Goulburn providing the broader range of services including hospitals, supermarkets, and high schools. It suits retirees, hobby farmers, and commuters who can manage the drive to Goulburn or even to Sydney on occasion.

Bungonia falls under postcode 2580 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Monaro electorate.
