About Bunya Mountains
Bunya Mountains is a remote highland locality spanning approximately 371 square kilometres across the Western Downs and South Burnett regions of Queensland, situated around 234 kilometres north-west of Brisbane and 109 kilometres north-north-west of Toowoomba. With a population of just 110 residents recorded in the 2021 Census, it is one of Queensland's smallest and most sparsely settled localities, with a density of under one person per square kilometre. The locality takes its name from the Bunya Mountains range, famed for the largest remaining stands of ancient bunya pines in the world and recognised as one of the most significant cultural landscapes in eastern Australia.
The locality is dominated by the Bunya Mountains National Park, established in 1908, which protects a remarkable mosaic of subtropical rainforest, eucalypt woodland, and wildlife-rich bushland, along with permanent waterfalls and panoramic views across the surrounding plains. The park is a popular destination for bushwalkers, campers, and wildlife enthusiasts, and holds deep spiritual significance for the Wakka Wakka, Jarowair, and Barrumgum peoples. Access to the Bunya Mountains is via steep and winding mountain roads, and there are no urban amenities within the locality itself — the nearest services are in the towns of Dalby and Kingaroy.
Bunya Mountains falls under postcode 4405 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warrego electorate.
