About Burrum River
Burrum River is a rural locality in the Fraser Coast Region of Queensland, situated approximately 24.5 kilometres west of Hervey Bay and 34.2 kilometres north-north-west of Maryborough, and about 291 kilometres south of Brisbane. Named after the Burrum River that flows through the area, the locality covers approximately 54 square kilometres and recorded a population of 259 in the 2021 Census. It falls under the Fraser Coast Regional Council and features the flat, bush and farmland terrain characteristic of the Wide Bay–Burnett region.
Burrum River has a notable history tied to 19th-century coal mining, when the Burrum coalfields supplied fuel to Maryborough and surrounding districts via river steamers. Today the area is a quiet rural locality where most residents rely on a private vehicle for access to services. Hervey Bay and Maryborough are the nearest urban centres, offering schools, shopping, healthcare, and transport connections. The Fraser Coast's celebrated natural attractions — including Great Sandy National Park, K'gari (Fraser Island), and the annual Hervey Bay whale-watching season — are all within easy reach.
Burrum River falls under postcode 4659 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Maryborough electorate.
