About Burrundie
Burrundie is a remote locality in the Victoria Daly Region of the Northern Territory, situated approximately 30 kilometres north of Pine Creek and 110 kilometres north-west of Katherine. Spanning a vast area of over 3,280 square kilometres, the locality is extremely sparsely populated, with only around 8 residents recorded at the 2021 Census. The name 'Burrundie' is believed to derive from the local Aboriginal language and refers to the area surrounding Mount Wells, a prominent local landmark.
The locality has a rich Indigenous heritage, with the Woolwonga Aboriginal people claiming Burrundie as part of their traditional lands. Historically, the area was the site of a short-lived mining settlement established in the 1880s that was abandoned after 1900. Today, the landscape is dominated by the rugged Top End bush, with vast tropical savanna, wetlands, and the Daly River catchment providing habitat for diverse wildlife. Burrundie is a true remote outback locality offering raw natural beauty and deep cultural significance.
Burrundie falls under postcode 822 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Spillett electorate.
