About Butler
Butler is a rural locality on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula, situated approximately 241 kilometres west of Adelaide and around 31 kilometres north of Tumby Bay, the nearest service town. The locality covers 281.3 square kilometres of the peninsula's open agricultural country, taking its name from the Butler Railway Station, the Butler Tanks water storage facility, and the Hundred of Butler in which it sits — all ultimately named after South Australian politician Richard Butler. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 69 residents, reflecting Butler's sparse settlement and working rural character.
The former Cummins to Buckleboo branch of the Eyre Peninsula Railway once passed through Butler, with two station sites — Butler and Mount Hill — though the line is no longer in operation. Today, residents rely on private vehicles to access services in Tumby Bay and Port Lincoln, approximately 76 kilometres to the south, which is the main regional centre on the Eyre Peninsula. The locality's isolation, broad plains, and proximity to the Spencer Gulf coastline give it a classic outback peninsula character. Butler suits those seeking a deeply rural lifestyle on one of Australia's most distinctive coastal peninsulas.
Butler falls under postcode 5605 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Flinders electorate.
