Covering 12 square kilometres of fertile Hunter River floodplain and low-lying agricultural land, the locality recorded a population of 190 at the 2021 census. The area shares a landscape character with the broader Butterwick Plain, historically one of the Hunter Valley's most productive agricultural districts, supporting dairy farming, beef cattle, citrus orchards and market gardens.
