About Cambrai
Cambrai is a small rural town and locality in the Mid Murray Council area of South Australia, situated on the eastern side of the Mount Lofty Ranges along the River Marne, approximately 89 kilometres east of Adelaide. Originally known as Rhine Villa, the town was renamed during World War I — one of many Australian localities that removed German place names at that time — after the famous Battle of Cambrai. The locality covers a large area of nearly 265 square kilometres and has a population of around 266 residents.
Set between the Barossa Valley and the Murray River in South Australia's Murraylands region, Cambrai is characterised by extensive farming and grazing land, with a district steeped in the traditions of German Lutheran settlement. The historic Cambrai Hotel remains a focal point for the community, and the town sits within 40 minutes of Angaston and the southern Barossa Valley. The area appeals to those who value a quiet rural lifestyle close to the scenic Mount Lofty Ranges and Murray River region, while remaining a manageable drive from Adelaide.
Cambrai falls under postcode 5353 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Schubert electorate.
