About Candelo

Candelo is a charming historic town in the Bega Valley Shire of south-eastern New South Wales, situated 448 kilometres south of Sydney and approximately 23 kilometres south-west of Bega. With a population of around 780 residents (2021 Census), Candelo was established in the 1860s and retains much of its original 19th-century character. The town was named by early settler Peter Imlay after his homestead 'Candelo House', which he in turn named after the town of Candelo in northern Italy.
