About Carrolup

Carrolup is a rural locality in the Shire of Katanning in Western Australia's Great Southern region, situated approximately 12 kilometres west of Katanning and 247 kilometres south-east of Perth. The locality covers 167 square kilometres of farmland and bushland on the traditional country of the Kaneang people of the Noongar Nation. With a population of around 49 residents, Carrolup is a quiet agricultural district centred on broadacre sheep and grain farming. The locality is home to the Carrolup River and the Carrolup Nature Reserve, which protects native bush along the river corridor.

Carrolup holds deep historical and cultural significance as the site of the Carrolup Native Settlement, established in 1915 as a welfare settlement for Aboriginal children. In the 1940s and 1950s, children at the settlement produced an extraordinary collection of drawings and artworks — known as the Carrolup artworks — that have since been internationally recognised and are now held in collections in Australia and the UK. The nearby town of Katanning (12 km east) serves as the local hub for shopping, medical services and community facilities. The broader Great Southern region is known for its agricultural productivity, wildflower season and scenic country landscapes.

Carrolup falls under postcode 6317 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Roe (Agricultural) electorate.
