About Cassowary
Cassowary is a tiny rural locality in Far North Queensland, located in the Tablelands region south-west of Cairns near the township of Mossman in Cook electorate. With a population of just 119 residents across 25 square kilometres, it is one of Queensland's smallest named localities. The area takes its name from the iconic Southern Cassowary, an endangered flightless bird native to the tropical rainforests of North Queensland.
The locality sits within a lush tropical landscape characterised by sugar cane farming, rainforest patches, and the remarkable biodiversity of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. Residents enjoy access to the famous Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef coastline nearby. Mossman provides the closest services including shops and schools, while Cairns is the regional hub for medical, commercial, and transport needs.
Cassowary falls under postcode 4873 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Cook electorate.
