About Charleston
Charleston is a small historic town nestled in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia, located on the Onkaparinga Valley Road between Woodside and Mount Torrens, about 35 kilometres east of Adelaide CBD. The town was laid out in 1857 by Charles Dunn and sits just 3 km south-east of Lobethal, close to the headwaters of the Onkaparinga River. The 2021 census recorded a population of around 317 people, giving the town a characteristically quiet and community-focused atmosphere. Charleston falls under the Adelaide Hills Council and the federal Division of Mayo.
Charleston offers a charming rural character with easy access to the scenery and wineries of the Adelaide Hills wine region and the nearby Barossa Valley. The town's location on a key route between the Hills and the Barossa means it sees some through-traffic, and the local hotel serves as a community gathering point. Lobethal (3 km away) provides everyday conveniences including a supermarket, primary school, and health services. The area appeals to those seeking a peaceful hillside lifestyle within reasonable reach of Adelaide.
Charleston falls under postcode 5244 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Schubert electorate.
