About Chewko
Chewko is a small rural locality on the Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland, situated approximately 20 kilometres north-east of Mareeba in the Mareeba Shire. The locality lies at an elevation on the fertile plateau country between Mareeba and the Kuranda Range, an area historically known for tobacco farming and now predominantly used for mixed horticulture, cattle grazing, and sugar cane on the lower fringes. The community is very small, with a scattered rural residential and farming population across roughly 42 square kilometres.
Chewko and its surroundings offer a relaxed tropical lifestyle with pleasant tableland climate, cooler and less humid than coastal Cairns. The area is well-positioned between the regional hubs of Mareeba and Kuranda, giving residents reasonable access to services, markets, and the tourism amenities of Kuranda Village. The Tablelands provide excellent opportunities for bushwalking, birdwatching, and exploring rainforest and savannah landscapes. Cairns city is accessible within approximately 40 minutes, making Chewko viable for those who work or study in the city while enjoying semi-rural acreage living.
Chewko falls under postcode 4880 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Hill electorate.
