About Christmas Hills
Christmas Hills is a large rural locality in north-west Tasmania, situated about 9 kilometres south-west of Smithton within the Circular Head Council area. Covering approximately 156 square kilometres in the North-west and West LGA region, the locality was gazetted in 1973 and takes its name from a lunch stop made by local pastoralist William Field on Christmas Day in the 1820s. With a population of 127, Christmas Hills is a thinly settled agricultural district, and the Bass Highway (Route A2) runs through the locality providing the main transport connection.
The locality is part of the Circular Head district, well known for its fertile agricultural land, dairy farming, and proximity to the Arthur River and Tarkine wilderness region. The Duck River forms a small part of the eastern boundary, adding to the area's natural character. Smithton, just 9 kilometres to the north-east, serves as the regional hub providing essential services including shops, schools, and medical facilities. Christmas Hills suits those drawn to a genuine rural lifestyle in Tasmania's lush north-west corner, where farming heritage and natural landscapes define everyday life.
Christmas Hills falls under postcode 7330 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Braddon (Murchison) electorate.
