About Churchill
Churchill is a planned town in the Latrobe Valley of central Gippsland, Victoria, located approximately 160 kilometres east of Melbourne and 11 kilometres from Morwell. The town has a population of around 4,900 and was established in 1965 as a housing centre for workers at the nearby Hazelwood Power Station. Named after former British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, it sits at the foot of the Strzelecki Ranges overlooking the Hazelwood pondage.
Churchill is home to the Gippsland campus of Federation University Australia, which brings a youthful energy to the town and provides educational and cultural facilities. The town centre features a shopping precinct, community hub, and the iconic "Big Cigar" monument. Surrounded by bushland and close to the Strzelecki Ranges, residents enjoy access to walking trails and nature reserves. Churchill attracts university students, young families, and retirees drawn by affordable housing and a relaxed regional lifestyle.
