About Coles
Coles is a rural locality on the Limestone Coast of South Australia, situated approximately 316 kilometres southeast of Adelaide and 39 kilometres southwest of Naracoorte, within the Naracoorte Lucindale Council area. Covering approximately 262 square kilometres of rolling pastoral country, the locality was gazetted in 1998 and is named for the local county. The 2021 Census recorded only 35 residents, reflecting the sparse settlement characteristic of this productive but thinly populated grazing district. The region forms part of the County of Robe, an area historically important for wool production.
The Limestone Coast region surrounding Coles is renowned for its red volcanic soils, extensive sheep and beef grazing, and emerging viticulture, with the Coonawarra wine region located to the northwest. Naracoorte, the main service town, offers supermarkets, schools, a hospital, and the famous Naracoorte Caves World Heritage Site. The South East Highway provides the primary transport corridor linking the region to Adelaide and the Victorian border. Lifestyle in the area revolves around farming, the outdoors, and close-knit rural community networks.
Coles falls under postcode 5272 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mackillop electorate.
