About Condamine
Condamine is a rural town and locality in Queensland's Western Downs Region, situated approximately 334 kilometres west of Brisbane and 33 kilometres south of Miles along the Leichhardt Highway. According to the 2021 Census, the locality had a population of 294 residents, reflecting its character as a small, tight-knit agricultural community set amid the flat, open plains of Queensland's Darling Downs and Western Downs country. The area spans a vast 787 square kilometres, encompassing extensive grazing and cropping land typical of this part of inland Queensland.
Condamine is steeped in pastoral history and is reputedly the birthplace of the Condamine Bell — a distinctive hand-forged sheet metal bell originally used by drovers to locate cattle herds on the open plains. The Condamine River flows through the region, supporting agricultural activity and providing a connection to the wider river system that drains much of inland Queensland. The town offers essential services for the surrounding farming community, and the broader Western Downs area is known for its strong agricultural production including cattle grazing and grain crops. The nearby town of Miles provides access to additional services, schools, and health facilities.
Condamine falls under postcode 4416 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warrego electorate.
