About Coolac

Coolac is a small historic village in the Riverina region of New South Wales, located approximately 19 kilometres south of Gundagai and 21 kilometres north of Jugiong within the Gundagai Council local government area. Established as early as 1824, Coolac is one of the older settlements in the Murrumbidgee River country, and sits on the Olympic Highway — the main route between Sydney and Melbourne via the Hume Highway corridor. The village lies at an elevation of around 308 metres in a pastoral landscape of rolling hills and farmland, with a population of around 244 residents according to the 2021 Census.

Coolac retains the quiet character of a traditional rural village, with the Coolac Hotel being a local landmark dating back to the area's early settlement history. The surrounding district is known for sheep and cattle grazing, with properties stretching across the gently undulating Murrumbidgee country. The village is well-placed for travellers on the Olympic Highway, offering a convenient rest stop between Gundagai and Cootamundra.
