Coolatai is a remote rural locality in the New England region of New South Wales, situated approximately 70 kilometres south-west of Inverell in the Gwydir Shire. Spread across more than 500 square kilometres of flat to gently undulating plains, the locality is dominated by extensive dryland cropping and livestock grazing operations typical of this part of the wheat and wool belt. The area has a tiny resident population of fewer than 100 people and operates as a sparsely settled farming district rather than a township.

The character of Coolatai is defined by wide open skies, red soil plains, and the rhythms of agricultural life. Farming families in the area grow wheat, sorghum, and other cereals, and run sheep and cattle across large holdings. The nearest town, Warialda, approximately 30 kilometres to the east, provides basic services including a school, hospital, and general stores. Inverell, the main regional centre, is accessible within about an hour's drive and offers a fuller range of retail, medical, and community facilities.
