About Coonambula
Coonambula is a vast and thinly settled rural locality in the North Burnett Region of Queensland, covering approximately 257 square kilometres of open agricultural land bounded to the east by the Burnett River. It sits within the North Burnett Regional Council area, approximately 25 kilometres north of Mundubbera and around 363 kilometres north-west of Brisbane. With a population of just 80 residents and a median household income of around $34,500, Coonambula is one of the most sparsely populated localities in the North Burnett, characterised by large grazing and pastoral stations.
The locality's name and history are linked to the early pastoral era — the Archer brothers established significant stations including Coonambula in the region during the 19th century, shaping the landscape for generations of graziers. Today, the area remains devoted to cattle grazing and mixed agriculture, with the Burnett River providing a vital water source for surrounding properties. Mundubbera, known as the Citrus Capital of Queensland, is the nearest service town, offering a small range of shops, a school, and medical services. The wider region also encompasses citrus orchards and broadacre farming along the Burnett River corridor.
Coonambula falls under postcode 4626 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Callide electorate.
