About Coorabie
Coorabie is an extremely remote locality on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula, situated approximately 700 kilometres north-west of Adelaide and not far from the edge of the Nullarbor Plain. Covering over 1,700 square kilometres, it is one of the most sparsely populated localities in South Australia, with around 71 residents recorded in the 2021 Census. The landscape is characterised by low scrubland, treeless plains, and the vast open horizons of the outback. The locality falls within the Flinders electorate and occupies a region where sheep grazing and pastoral activities are the primary land uses.
Life in Coorabie is shaped entirely by its remote setting. Essential services are minimal, with residents travelling long distances to Ceduna (approximately 130 kilometres east) for shopping, healthcare, and schooling. The area has a raw, frontier character, and its residents are typically hardy and self-reliant. The locality sits near the Yalata Indigenous community and the Great Australian Bight, making it part of a broader region rich in Aboriginal heritage and extraordinary coastal scenery. For those who choose this lifestyle, the vastness and silence of the outback are its greatest attractions.
Coorabie falls under postcode 5690 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Flinders electorate.
