About Cootamundra

Cootamundra, affectionately nicknamed 'Coota', is a historic country town in the South West Slopes region of New South Wales, located approximately 390 kilometres south-west of Sydney and 161 kilometres from Canberra. The town sits within the Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council at an elevation of 318 metres, on the Olympic Highway where it crosses the Muttama Creek. With a population of around 5,732, Cootamundra is perhaps best known as the birthplace of cricket legend Sir Donald Bradman, born here in 1908.

Cootamundra offers a relaxed rural lifestyle with a surprisingly strong community spirit and well-preserved heritage streetscapes. The town is home to Bradman Oval, the famous cricket ground named in honour of its most celebrated son, alongside excellent parks, sporting facilities, and the iconic Cootamundra Wattle (Acacia baileyana) — a species of golden wattle first cultivated here. Agriculture is the economic backbone, with sheep, wheat, and canola farming dominating the surrounding landscape. The Main Southern railway line passes through, connecting residents to Wagga Wagga and beyond.

Cootamundra falls under postcode 2590 and is governed by Gundagai Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Cootamundra electorate.
